How can you have more time, money and enjoyment from running your own paving business? We’re almost certain that most of you are still asking yourselves this question, without realising how easily and quickly these goals can be achieved. The key is effective action! Everything will go your way when you’re well organised. So let’s get to work!
Planning in the paving business
Planning is part of our lives. We do it more or less consciously. Some people need calendars, planners, notebooks, coloured highlighters or sticky notes to be able to ‘organise’ their lives. For others, a morning brainstorming session is enough. And how does it work in business? You can’t get anywhere without a good plan! Goals won’t be achieved on their own unless you take the right steps to make your work easier. This whole planning process is necessary for carrying out a paving project. Want to see for yourself?
Step one – identifying the ‘investor’s’ needs
Just as you meet with an investor, meet with yourself. Ask yourself: what is important to you in running a paving business? Which areas of your business need refinement? What are you, your employees, subcontractors or contractors missing? What do you do well, and what always causes problems? If you find it hard to gather your thoughts, put them down on paper. Identify your needs so that you can take the right action.
Step two – the plan
Do you already know what you need? That’s great. Now you need to ‘map out’ your ideas for achieving your goals so that they take on a tangible form. First, visualise the path you need to follow to achieve your goals. It’s about choosing a course of action: set your priorities and highlight what matters most to you. Put your creative flair to the test!
Step three – timing
Open your calendar and take a look at how your business operates. During the first meeting, the investor will likely ask about specific deadlines and the timeframe for completing the project. The same applies to planning. You must set specific dates for achieving your goals so that they motivate you! Of course, you need to take into account the possibility of unforeseen events – but you have no control over that. Just remember that when setting a timeframe, the aim isn’t to complete your project as quickly as possible.
Step four – implementation and organisation
Don’t wait, get started! There’s a lot of work to do, so the sooner you begin implementation (both on-site tasks and the points in your plan), the better. Remember, however, to keep things organised. After all, you don’t like it when the place where you work is in chaos. You can’t afford that in planning either. Organise your tasks by priority – try to start with the ones that are most important to you. Know your limits, be consistent and systematic in what you do. Remember, though, that in both paving work and planning (and carrying out the plan), you need to find time to rest.
Step five – stick to your plan
Has the client commissioned you to lay a paver driveway? We know you’re brilliant at this and you’ll certainly manage it! You’ll take care of every detail (as befits a professional) and focus on ensuring the whole thing looks perfect. Think of your plan in the same way – keep checking all its elements, refine them, and update them if necessary. Make sure you achieve your current goals, but also look for new solutions and ideas :)
