Clear snow sensibly!

It’s nice to sit in an armchair whilst snow is falling outside the window. However, white snow is not just a pleasure, but also a duty. Clearing snow from pavements is not a pleasant task, but it is necessary, as it is the only way to ensure the safety of ourselves, our loved ones and passers-by. Here are some tips on how to do it effectively and correctly.

Winter is a difficult time for property owners. Changeable weather conditions force constant attention to the condition of the surface, which can turn into a slippery and dangerous sheet of ice in the blink of an eye. It is also a demanding test for all building materials exposed to the elements. Frequent snowfall, low temperatures, and repeated freezing and thawing can damage the materials used in the surface.

Do this regularly

. Regularity is the key to proper winter surface maintenance. Of course, no one is suggesting you clear snow from the entire surface after every snowfall. The main point is to ensure that snow does not accumulate on the concrete pavers and does not pose a hazard to pedestrians. Every property owner whose property borders a public pavement has a legal obligation to ensure it is cleared of snow – a thick layer of snow, combined with frequent temperature changes, causes ice to form in the lower layer, which has a destructive effect on the surface. This also poses a risk to pedestrians, as we’ve all probably slipped on a pavement that hadn’t been properly cleared of snow at some point – explains Krzysztof Wilk, Chief Technologist atPolbrukS.A.
We can protect ourselves from this by using appropriate, safe and manufacturer-recommended snow-melting agents. When we don’t have them to hand and winter has caught us off guard, we have to clear the snow using traditional tools.

Remember more than just a hat and gloves

When starting winter clearing work, it is always worth remembering to wear suitable work clothing, a hat and gloves. Choosing the right tools for the job is just as important. We must ensure they do not damage the pavers. Let’s use those made from materials that guarantee effective performance and ensure the safety of the surface. In this way, we will avoid damage to the top layer of the pavers, which often occurs when clearing snow with metal tools. – Damaging it leads to a weakening of the material’s structure and, consequently, its durability. Damage to the facing layer can worsen over time and cause our pavements to lose their presentable appearance,” says Krzysztof Wilk of Polbruk S.A.
In the battle against winter, particularly during light snowfall, chemical agents will also be helpful.

No white stains

The most common method of getting rid of unwanted snow and ice is to sprinkle salt on the surface. Let’s not do that. The white powder will certainly melt very quickly. However, once dry, white discolouration will appear on the pavers, which will adversely affect the appearance of your pavement after the winter season. A more sensible and safer solution is to use magnesium chloride, which removes snow and ice without leaving unwanted stains or slush. It is also safe for plants and animals… and leaves no marks on your shoes.

Frost resistance and low water absorption – the key to success

The advice we have provided above will help keep your paver surface in good condition. Remember, however, that a great deal depends on the quality of the material you purchase for building your pavements and paths. It is worth paying particular attention to two parameters – frost resistance and low water absorption (resistance to water absorption) of the concrete pavers, which are extremely important during the winter. Products from Polbruk boast the best parameters in this regard. With proper maintenance, this guarantees a long life for the pavers.
