The most important element and foundation of any terrace design is the surface. Traditionally, this can be made from natural materials such as wood or stone. However, from a practical and cost-effective point of view, it is better to choose materials that successfully imitate these, as they are much easier to maintain and cheaper to purchase. – Concrete pavers and slabs are a good solution for anyone who values the durability of their terrace surface. Moreover, they are simple and cheap to maintain. As for design, however, it is safe to say that the range of designs is currently so extensive that it surpasses what nature has come up with,” says Wojciech Średniawa, Chief Designer at Polbruk. The choice of patterns and colours is very wide, but let us remember that when we choose a surface, it must harmonise with the architecture of our home and garden.
Modernity on a grand scale
The houses currently being designed in Poland offer a true architectural showcase. Buildings constructed in a modern style, with simple geometric forms, large glazed areas and façades made of sheet metal, clinker brick (usually grey) or wood-effect cladding, are very popular. Gardens designed for this type of architecture are usually modern in style – focusing on geometric, simple, even minimalist solutions based on the contrast between greenery and the architecture. Given these principles, the natural choice is paving made from large-format concrete slabs or blocks with a minimalist design. Those in shades of grey and beige have become extremely popular,” says Wojciech Średniawa.
A good example of this type of design is the Polbruk Lamell slab. It has a rectangular shape, measures 60x40 cm and is 4.5 cm thick. Thanks to its simple yet stylish appearance, it can be successfully used as a terrace finish and serve as a natural extension of the living room. Lamell is available in two textures – smooth and washed (slightly rough). The former comes in eight colour options. The latter, however, is available in dark grey ritmo and light grey bianka.
An alternative to this solution is the Multicomplex slab. It offers greater design flexibility as it comes in three sizes: 20x40 cm, 40x40 cm and 60x40 cm. The smooth-textured version in nerino will be the most sought-after choice for modern projects.
