The paving business – why is it worth doing an end-of-year review?

Add to favorites
The year 2020, which has been difficult for us all, is slowly drawing to a close. Many people are probably just waiting to leave it behind them as soon as possible. That is understandable. But regardless of the circumstances, the end of the year is always a good time for summaries and analysis – including in the paving business. Someone might think: “What do you mean? I’m not some construction corporation that needs to do an end-of-year review…” But such a review is useful for everyone, including micro-businesses and sole traders.

For some, a year-end review may bring to mind New Year’s resolutions, which few people actually stick to. For others, it’s reminiscent of reports from large corporations. Both associations are understandable, but… far from the point. A year-end review is something that everyone can benefit from. After all, how else can you check whether your business is heading in the right direction? And every entrepreneur wants to grow, don’t they? In the paving industry, winter often offers a breather. Of course, the weather varies, and some will probably be working almost right up to Christmas Eve, but… perhaps somewhere between Christmas and New Year’s Eve you’ll find a moment to review the year. Trust us – it’s really worth it! So how do you go about it?

Start with the preparations

First, get something to write with. It’s best to write these things down by hand – you’ll remember more that way. If you keep important company information in a calendar or notebook, that will come in handy too. And of course, your smartphone – for notes, important emails or photos. Do you take photos of your projects or work progress? This is very useful when summarising the year, as you’ll recall many things just by looking at the ‘pictures’ themselves.

List the most important events

Start your year-end review by listing the most important events related to your business. Everything that deserves analysis should be included here. There’s quite a lot, isn’t there? Next, reflect on your company’s successes this year. What went well? What are you proud of? These can be both major achievements and small successes. The next important step is to note down the things that didn’t go as planned. Is there anything you failed to achieve? What could you have done better? It’s not about dwelling on the past. Rather, it’s about looking at it from the outside, drawing conclusions and moving forward. While you’re at it, think about what you’ve learnt and how you’ve grown. Because learning comes from successes, of course, but you usually learn the most from failures.

Plan your success

You now have enough data to think about your plans for next year. Answer this question honestly: which area of your business do you most want to develop? Or perhaps there’s a type of project that doesn’t suit you or isn’t bringing in the expected profits? It’s also worth thinking about the skills you’d like to develop. Maybe you want to improve your training in something? Or perhaps devote more attention to, say, marketing your business? You should, of course, write down your plans and goals. Only then will you be able to review them in the future. It’s also important that they’re specific and realistic – there’s no point in planning to take over the world if you’ve got no chance of doing so .
Now all that’s left is for you to step into the New Year with clear plans and the energy to carry them out. And that, dear Professional, is what we wish for you!
