The first step toward… a beautiful property!

A sloped lot poses a real challenge for its owners, designers, and pavers. At first glance, such terrain can cause many layout problems. However, after careful consideration and the development of designs, it offers various possibilities for land use. In the case of driveways, the situation is clear—the slope of the terrain is a key factor. When it comes to paths and walkways, you can be more creative and level out uneven terrain by building steps.

Step One – Fundamental Principles of Stair

Construction First, stair treads must be safe to use. Their height is regulated by building codes and should not exceed 15 cm. If the staircase is longer than 0.5 m, you must not forget to install a handrail.
Second—comfort is key. Every additional centimeter in height can be a challenge for the elderly or small children. When it comes to the width of the steps, the rule is simple: a wider step is better than a narrower one. A surface that is too narrow does not ensure stability for users.

Step Two: Top-Quality

Materials Polbruk offers many products that can be used for installing steps. The flagship product in this category is the Grando step, which allows you to build stairs with the appropriate width and height. Elements from this series are available in two sizes. The steps are manufactured so that their height is 15 cm, and the tread dimensions vary depending on the finish version. For the smooth step, the dimensions are 46x100 cm, and for the chamfered step, 40x100 cm. Thanks to this design, the product installs easily, and due to its solid construction, it is less susceptible to damage and retains its properties for many years.
The use of other products in projects is not ruled out. The materials used to construct the stairs can have any shape or texture; for example, the Canto edge Trapez is ideal for finishing rounded steps. These are rectangles in light gray or beige, with a texture resembling limestone. A unique character for the steps can also be achieved by using products from Ideo, which allow for the creation of various combinations, as well as the product from Multicomplex, or smaller cubes.

Step Three – Proven Solutions

Stability, durable material, an aesthetic finish, and resistance to weather and the test of time—these are the results your customers will expect when they commission the construction of steps. You can meet their expectations by adhering to the proper installation guidelines discussed in this document. Also, remember to determine—for example—the level of foot traffic on a given surface before beginning the project. If it turns out to be low, there will be no need to create special substructures. The same applies to minor differences in ground elevation.

Step Four—Solid Execution

The construction of stair treads requires experience and expertise from professionals. Before starting work, you must inspect the ground and assess its properties. The next step is to determine the height “from the ground to the door”—to avoid having to cut the materials to size. This step involves laying out the staircase. Once the planning is complete, it’s time to build the foundation, which is located beneath the first step in the flight. The next step is to grade the ground, followed by laying a layer of gravel, crushed stone, or aggregate. After that, you should begin installing the edging elements (palisades, curbs). Tip: It’s best to do this on dry or semi-dry concrete. Place the subbase (also made of semi-dry concrete) on top of the layer mentioned earlier. Now you can move on to laying the pavers or slabs. A few helpful tips
: - Each subsequent step should overlap the previous one by about 2–3 cm
. - The blocks should be slightly sloped (to allow water to drain)
. - When using stair treads Grando, you do not need to use edging elements.

Step Five – Top-Notch

Quality A true professional pays attention to every detail of the project, no matter how small. For grouting, they use the highest-quality materials, which stabilize the steps laid on soft surfaces. A recommended product is DR+ polymer sand NextGel™, which ensures easy, clean, and quick grouting. This finish allows you to enjoy the beautiful appearance of the steps for many years to come.
