How can you effectively tackle the problem of weeds and moss on paved surfaces?

With the arrival of spring or summer, the joy of carefully crafted driveways, paths and alleys can easily be marred by unwelcome guests. Weeds, moss and grass are particularly troublesome inhabitants of the property, which many of us try to get rid of in various ways. Karol Umiński, chief technologist at Polbruk, offers advice on how to effectively tackle the problem of weeds and moss in your own garden.

The critical point in paved surfaces is the joints between individual blocks or slabs. These are most often filled with washed sand or other fine aggregate. – This method is relatively quick and cheap. Unfortunately, it also encourages the growth of weeds, which, once rooted in the ground, can easily penetrate the layer of loose material. The best conditions for their growth are found in damp and shaded areas, for example on the north side of a property or near ponds and other bodies of water. That is precisely why these areas will be particularly prone to the problem of weed growth – explains Karol Umiński from Polbruk. So how can you protect yourself against troublesome vegetation?

Decisively and with a plan!

The basic method of control is, of course, manual removal, usually using common tools available in garden centres. However, to save time and energy, it is worth looking for other solutions as well. “Remember that moss and lichen can often be removed using a standard pressure washer,” the expert points out.

As manual removal rarely results in the complete eradication of the plant, including its roots, special chemical agents are used to improve and consolidate the cleaning effect. – “In addition to choosing the right product, it is important to apply it correctly, preferably using a precise dispenser. Before starting to spray, it is advisable to carry out a test on a small area of the surface to ensure that the product does not cause discolouration of the pavers,” suggests Karol Umiński from Polbruk, adding: – It is also worth remembering that treating the pavers with a special impregnating agent beforehand will help provide additional protection against both potential discolouration and the growth of moss or lichen on the surface.

Prevention rather than cure?

Troublesome weed growth in the joints can also be prevented in other ways, for example by replacing the aggregate jointing compound with a special mortar or epoxy jointing compound for pavers. – This solution is not susceptible to overgrowth or material leaching, and additionally strengthens the paver bonds. In the case of aggregate fillings, however, it is worth spraying the joints with a suitable agent as a preventative measure in early spring, especially in areas particularly prone to overgrowth – says an expert from Polbruk.

All cleaning and protective work should be carried out in such a way that the pavers are not damaged by the tools or chemicals used. Armed with the expert’s knowledge and practical advice, we will certainly be able to effectively tackle the problem of unwanted vegetation on driveways, paths and walkways.
