How to create a rockery in your garden?

Add to favorites
Classic, modern, multi-tiered, colourful, minimalist. A small rockery in your garden can have just as many faces as a grand garden. To elevate the creation of stone and plant compositions to an art form, it is worth using durable, striking and versatile materials. In other words, exactly the kind found in the range offered by Polbruk.

A traditional rockery, as the name suggests, is created using natural stones. If you have difficulty finding suitable specimens, it can also be built using sturdy and attractive paving materials that perfectly mimic the structure and appearance of natural stone.

On a slope
An area in the garden often converted into a rockery is the ground adjacent to the edge of the steps. To secure its edges and thereby create an interesting space for growing plants, it is worth using the Grando wall . - Individual elements should be laid on a concrete foundation 30–40 cm thick. The ‘wet’ method will further reinforce the entire structure, especially if a suitably prepared cement-sand mortar or modern frost-resistant adhesive is used as the binder ,” advises Wojciech Średniawa, Chief Designer at Polbruk .
The Ring Palisade and Broken Palisade from Polbruk , on the other hand, allow you to create rockeries even on a perfectly flat surface. All you need to do is use them to demarcate a section of the area and then fill it with garden soil. - We fix the individual elements to a depth of about 1/4 to 1/3 of their height in a foundation made of so-called ‘lean concrete’. Apart from fixing the palisades themselves, it is important to level them perfectly. Any gaps should not be filled with any additional binder – says an expert from Polbruk.

A blooming solution
A quick solution for a rockery is also the Polbruk Mini Luna and Mini Abax planters, which allow for the construction of low structures that can also serve as a place to grow plants. Furthermore, they allow you to create stable boundaries for the entire composition and protect its slopes from landslides. An advantage of these planters is their hollow interior, which is perfect for small flowering plants and even climbing plants. - Planters are laid on a concrete foundation 30–40 cm thick, bearing in mind that natural water retention within them must be maintained. For reasons of stability and safety, it is important that rockeries created in this way do not rise to a height of more than 1 metre. The same applies to rockeries finished using Wall Grando – explains Wojciech Średniawa.

Rockery-style
plants It must not be forgotten that a rockery is much more than just concrete and stone elements. It also includes plants, which must be selected with equal care. Perennials such as sedum, saxifrage or pasque flower are most commonly chosen to green up rock compositions. Bulbous plants, such as tulips and crocuses, also look striking, though it is important to remember to quickly remove the unsightly above-ground parts once they have finished flowering. Creeping conifers are also a good option. To prevent them from eventually dominating the rockery’s vegetation, it is best to plant them at the edges, where they can spread freely without hindrance. Impressive ornamental grasses, such as feather grass, Chinese silver grass and fescue, will also add charm to the whole composition. Furthermore, by choosing plants with varied flowering times, we can ensure that the garden rockery remains an enchanting feature of the property all year round.
