What work should be done at the start of the season?

After winter, the appearance of our garden is certainly far from ideal. Restoring it to its former glory will be speeded up by carrying out a few key tasks

An attractive garden loses its purpose if, despite its striking plants, it is criss-crossed by a network of neglected paths. We can maintain both the appearance of garden paths and the surfaces adjacent to the facades with a few simple and quick steps.

Spring cleaning
– Traditionally, we start cleaning by sweeping the entire surface. After winter, it is worth cleaning the pavers with a pressure washer. There is no need to buy expensive equipment; simply hire one from a rental firm. If you want to save time, you can also hire a specialist firm to clean the paved surface. Later in the season, regular cleaning with a stiff brush and a solution of water and washing-up liquid will suffice. Home remedies also work well for removing weed residues from the joints. We should avoid salt solutions, as they cause soil salinisation and may adversely affect the appearance of the pavers. Manual weed removal should be carried out using special tools that will not damage the structure of the individual pavers – says Wojciech Średniawa from Polbruk. We finish weeding and cleaning by filling in the gaps in the joints. Simply scatter the sand, spread it with a brush, and sweep away the excess. To protect the surface for the future, it is also worth applying a waterproofing treatment using the product Polbruk Efekt.

With greenery
in mind Plants are synonymous with any garden, which is why revitalising our little patch of greenery at home is inextricably linked to caring for the surrounding flora. To begin with, it is worth tackling the lawn, which we first rake thoroughly. The next step is scarification, which will allow water and fertilisers to reach the roots themselves. When it comes to fertilising, it is important to choose a product containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, or to opt for an organic fertiliser (compost). Moving on to plant care, you should first prune the perennials. Ornamental shrubs, such as lavender, hydrangeas and perennial roses, will also require care. Last on the list are fruit trees and shrubs. When sowing flowering plants, it is best to follow the instructions on the packet.
In spring, it is also worth preparing your garden furniture for the new season. Properly cleaned and oiled wooden sun loungers, tables and chairs will patiently await the weather suitable for the first outdoor gatherings.
