Metamorphoses – time for change in the fabric of Polish cities

Across the length and breadth of Poland, changes are taking place in towns and cities aimed at improving residents’ quality of life. However, revitalisation with a capital ‘R’ requires time, the exchange of experiences and best practice. Only then does it stand a chance of succeeding – argue the organisers and partners of the “Metamorphoses – Revitalisation of Polish Cities” programme, which has been launched in Poland’s largest cities.

The nationwide "Metamorfozy" programme is an educational and promotional initiative aimed at filling a knowledge gap regarding the issue of urban regeneration. The programme’s objectives include, amongst other things, educating and supporting all participants in investment processes – investors, designers and contractors – in the exchange of information and solutions. The programme is also aimed at beneficiaries of EU funds. Under the Regional Operational Programmes, the EU has allocated approximately €31.3 billion for the development of Polish cities (2014–2020). In addition to marshal’s offices, architects and representatives of companies and manufacturers whose activities fit within the concept of urban infrastructure regeneration have joined the initiative.

The revitalisation process consists of a series of measures that ultimately lead to the regeneration of a specific area and its return to use by residents. The implementation of the social dimension is undoubtedly the most important aspect of this process, but it would not be possible without carrying out more practical tasks, such as: modernising transport routes, squares and green spaces, and renovating recreational or service areas. In this regard, it is up to the company Polbruk to support the organisers in implementing the programme’s objectives.

For the funds allocated to urban regeneration to be spent wisely, knowledge, the exchange of experiences and cooperation are required. The “Metamorphoses” programme serves precisely this purpose. The promotion of state-of-the-art material, technological and construction solutions, along with expert support from experienced architects and firms, is intended to improve spatial planning, the state of the environment and the built environment, and, in the longer term, the well-being of residents. The aim: to transform the fabric (including the social fabric) of Polish cities.

The programme has been initiated by the editorial team of the monthly magazine “Builder”. Further information about the initiative can be found on the organiser’s website: www.buildercorp.pl.
