The wide range of low walls, palisades and edging available on the market offers endless possibilities for arranging the space around the home. These elements are an invaluable aid in shaping slopes and organising the space. They provide an aesthetic border for the surface, ensuring its durability and safety. What is more, the ability to use ready-made products eliminates the need to adapt and cut elements to fit hard-to-reach areas or winding paths.
They reinforce the edges of pavements and driveways
The entire composition of the surfaces of footpaths and garage driveways should be topped off with kerbs or edging. These elements not only demarcate individual zones, separating areas intended for pedestrians and vehicles, but also reinforce and stabilise the entire surface. Furthermore, they prevent the pavers from spreading under load, thereby minimising the risk of rutting and damage. The durability of the paved area is ensured by traditional kerbs, lawn edging or decorative elements such as the ‘Modern’ edging, ‘Endo’ edging or ‘Canto’ edging, as well as palisades or even drainage channels. - The size of the stabilising elements is selected according to the intended use of the space and the terrain – the greater the load, the more substantial the edging should be. Furthermore, to enhance the aesthetics and comfort of use, various types of edging can be used depending on the location. For example, Canto edging with a rounded edge, which is designed to mark the boundaries of rockeries and flowerbeds, can be used on driveways, making it easier and safer to drive onto the paved surface – explains Wojciech Średniawa, a designer at Polbruk.
They will help create a flower island and flowerbeds
To create small, ground-level flower islands or flowerbeds, we can also use edging or the pavers used to create paths. However, for more substantial plantings, particularly those situated on a slope, it is worth using palisades or retaining walls. These elements work very well as a barrier to prevent soil from slipping.
Furthermore, as the Palisades Hestra,Zen
or the Broken Palisade
are more decorative than simple edging, they organise the space whilst enhancing its aesthetic appeal. - Slopes or rockeries planted with flowers visually enlarge the space around the house and greatly enrich the garden landscape. It is worth noting that, especially on flat and small plots, even differences in height of just a few centimetres visually increase the area. Interestingly, the use of palisades or flowerbeds when creating mounds as part of artificial landscaping takes up much less space than natural slopes
– adds an expert from Polbruk
.
Palisades are also used to reinforce the edges of flowerbeds, borders around trees, fountains, or even for building steps. Flower beds, on the other hand, are designed to reinforce embankments and slopes, as well as to create standalone flowerbeds, low walls, fences and vertical green walls, i.e. those decorated with plants. These elements are used when we wish to separate areas at different levels, for example a slope from a lawn.
They can be used to build stairs
A few steps can be constructed using palisades, low walls, or dedicated… steps. “Grando stair treads were designed specifically for creating stair edges.” We can also achieve striking compositions using Canto Edging Trapez or Broken Palisade,
” adds Wojciech Średniawa. We can build low or more imposing garden walls using the product Polbruk Antara II
. Thanks to split blocks, it is possible to separate the garden from the rest of the property or completely fence off the plot.
To ensure the palisades or walls are sufficiently durable, it is important to remember that these elements require stable foundations, particularly for more complex projects. These are constructed from concrete on a aggregate base. Self-erected retaining structures should not exceed 1 metre in height – above this height, it is recommended to seek the assistance of a professional designer.
The wide range of elements available in terms of shape and colour allows them to be tailored to individual tastes, the style of the property, and the character of the building. Thanks to their decorative qualities and functionality, palisades, low walls and edging can be used in almost any garden.
