Polbruk Effect – winter impregnation

Pavers are a material particularly vulnerable to external factors, especially in winter. Layers of snow, sub-zero temperatures or significant daily temperature fluctuations severely weaken the surface’s durability. How should you care for it during the winter and what products are best to use for this purpose?

Winter is a real test of durability for pavers. Frequent temperature fluctuations around 0°C cause water to freeze and thaw; as it seeps into the gaps between the blocks and the concrete structure, it weakens it. Other threats include treatments, often poorly suited to the type of surface, de-icing agents, and all kinds of mechanical damage. To extend the life of the pavers and avoid future costs associated with their replacement, it is worth using suitable impregnating agents in winter, e.g. Polbruk Efekt.

- Polbruk Efekt is a liquid treatment designed, amongst other things, for pavers, decking and fences, which makes surfaces resistant to dirt and weathering and prevents them from absorbing water. This is important not only for aesthetic reasons but also for safety. Treated elements do not absorb water, significantly reducing the risk of cracking. The structure of the concrete surface remains intact, so there is no need to worry that the impregnating agent will cause, for example, changes in colour. The product penetrates deep into the treated surface, is alkali-resistant, and at the same time allows the concrete to breathe. It dries in just 20 minutes – explains Wojciech Średniawa, chief designer at Polbruk.

One of the most common ways to de-ice a pavement or driveway is to sprinkle it with salt. However, this method can cause discolouration, so a safer solution is to use sand, which also provides additional protection against slipping, or simply to use products recommended by specialists and designed specifically for this type of treatment.

Terraces, driveways and pavements should be looked after all year round so that they last as long as possible. However, once we decide to treat them, it is worth using tried-and-tested solutions and products that are guaranteed not to damage the surface.
