1. Driveway dimensions
Regardless of the model of car we will be parking, the optimal width of the driveway is 3 metres. The more space we have available, the more freely we can experiment with the layout of the driveway and, when marking out the surface, include additional access routes: a turning area for a second car or convenient paths leading to the house, garden or wood store.
2. Paver thickness
For vehicles not exceeding 3.5 tonnes, 6 cm thick pavers are sufficient. For heavier vehicles, it is recommended to use pavers with a minimum thickness of 8 cm.
3. Shape of the pavers
Both small and large pavers will look very attractive on a driveway. When designing a driveway, however, it is worth bearing a few rules in mind:
1) Small pavers work well in smaller spaces, narrow driveways and curves, where they eliminate the need for unnecessary cutting, as well as in areas with changes in gradient (smaller stones are more resistant to damage).
2) Large slabs and pavers look best in larger areas, where we can afford to create spacious layouts.
4. Design style
Depending on your preferences, the colour of the façade and the roof tiles, you can choose from stylised products (for example: the distinctive Polbruk Petra, colour blends) and modern ones (all kinds of washed pavers, terrace slabs). When selecting colours, look for common elements (roof, fencing). The most common colour combinations are: brown + yellow and grey + graphite, whilst among stylised products, hawaii (brown-orange) + latte (white-light sand), i.e. any contrasting combinations. For the more adventurous, we can recommend not only playing with colours, but also with sizes within the same colour but using different types of pavers. Example: combining rectangular pavers Polbruk Granito latte with trapezoidal ones Polbruk Carmino in the same or contrasting colours. When designing, let’s also pay attention to the details: drainage channels or inspection hatches, which can be concealed beneath the pavers to create an aesthetically pleasing arrangement. It is best to commission the design from a professional consultant and discuss the specifications and our expectations with them. All reputable manufacturers offer a design service.
