The perfect driveway – what you need to consider

Durable, well-lit, safe – these are the characteristics of the ideal driveway. Check out the inspiration at Polbruk for driveway design and other surfaces.

The appearance and construction of a driveway depend on the size of the plot available and how we wish to develop it. In the past, particularly at palaces and noble residences, it served, alongside the fence and garden, as a measure of the property owner’s wealth. Today, driveways at houses are quite short due to the limited size of building plots. They usually consist of a short path suitable for both pedestrians and vehicles, leading from the gate surrounding the property to the garage. Most often, due to the ease of installation and the durability of the material, they are made of concrete slabs or pavers. We will advise you on how to build a durable and safe driveway that has a unique character.

Thickness means durability

The most important aspect to consider when building a driveway is the durability of the materials used and how easily they can be removed if damaged. In this comparison of building materials, concrete slabs and pavers are the clear winners. - These are durable materials, easy to maintain and quick to replace if the surface needs repairing. However, we must remember that when building a driveway, we need to choose concrete blocks or slabs that can withstand the weight of vehicles of a certain mass, says Wojciech Średniawa, chief designer at Polbruk. A surface made of 6 cm thick concrete elements can be used to build driveways for passenger cars and vans weighing no more than 3.5 tonnes. If heavier vehicles are to be parked in your garage, you should choose elements at least 8 cm thick. – One of the most durable solutions we offer is the Polbruk Magna slab. It is available in two thicknesses: 8 and 10 cm. It is ideal for building driveways for modern-style homes due to its rectangular shape and colour scheme. Our products from the Retencja+ range Polbruk Meba , Polbruk Tech Retencja+, or Polbruk Traiada Retencja+ – are often used in driveway construction – emphasises Wojciech Średniawa.  The right choice of materials, combined with proper design and installation of the surface, should ensure that our driveway remains in impeccable condition for many years to come.

Heated and well-lit – meaning safe

Other factors are also important when building a driveway. In our climate zone, for safety reasons, it is worth investing in a heated driveway. This is particularly important in winter, when it can become slippery due to frozen precipitation. For short driveways with a gentle gradient, heating mats or cables laid across the width of the car’s wheelbase are usually used. For long driveways with a steep gradient and heavy traffic, specialists recommend installing the system across the entire surface. The use of anti-icing solutions also has a positive effect on the durability and appearance of the concrete surface, as it eliminates the need for aggressive de-icing agents. In the long term, these can lead to the degradation of building materials. For driveways with a steep gradient and a large surface area, it is worth investing in linear (heated) drainage systems to which excess water flows. However, good protection against winter weather conditions is not enough.

The driveway should also be properly and tastefully lit so that navigating it at night is not a problem. To this end, recessed lights can be installed in the surface or, for example, the edging can be illuminated using RGB LED strips suitable for outdoor use. – The Flesz edging, shaped like an inverted letter ‘L’, is ideal for installing LED strips. The strip is mounted under the ‘canopy’, which means the light gently illuminates the surface, making the driveway look very elegant and, above all, safer for users,” says Wojciech Średniawa from Polbruk. Another lighting option is medium-height light posts located on both sides of the driveway. Durability and safety are not the only aspects to consider when building a driveway. Its style is also of great importance, as it must harmonise with the rest of the surroundings.

Find your style

The range of available aesthetic solutions is very wide, as there is a vast selection of concrete blocks and slabs with a thickness of 6 cm or more. Among them, you will find surfaces to suit almost any style of home and garden. - For use in homes and gardens designed in a modern style, where heavier vehicles will be using the driveway, we recommend slabs Polbruk Magna in Corten steel colour, nerino or alpen. For service runs to outbuildings, Polbruk Meba, Greengo or Tetka. If the architecture surrounding our home is rustic or Mediterranean in style, then Petra, Napoli or Trento – says Wojciech Średniawa from Polbruk. On the other hand, if only vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes will be using our driveway, the range of patterns, shapes and colours of 6 cm thick pavers and slabs is so vast that, in essence, the only limitations are our imagination and sense of taste.

Let’s remember to choose the type of paving wisely and adapt it to the space we have available. It is solely on this that it depends whether our driveway will serve as a showcase for our property for many years to come.
